General Education - The Distribution Requirement

To ensure that CAS students develop a broad familiarity with the range of human knowledge, they must take twelve courses distributed among seven areas of study, with the option of omitting one area. Most 100- and 200-level CAS courses are assigned to distribution areas and count towards this requirement. These courses are identified in the Schedule of Courses by letter codes representing distribution areas. Distribution areas are also identified in the Undergraduate Catalog. The areas and their codes are:

  • The Arts (A)
  • Historical and Cultural Studies (H)
  • Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (P)
  • Social and Behavioral Studies (S)
  • Natural Sciences (N)
  • Mathematics and Computer Science (M)
  • Foreign Languages (F)

Please note that Math Q114 is the same course that has previously been given as Inter-D 114. If taken prior to summer 2001 this course may count for distribution requirements in the Mathematics area for all students except those who must fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning Requirement (i.e., students matriculating with 29 or fewer credits in fall 2000 and thereafter; all students matriculating in fall 2001 and thereafter.)
