GRADUATE CERTIFICATE: TEACHING OF SPANISH
Eighteen-credit
graduate certificate program designed to address the needs of pre-service and
in-service teachers who need to improve or enhance their skills in the field of
Spanish. The Graduate Certificate offers a flexible course of study combining
both new and traditional methods of teaching, and the Spanish language with
presentations of geographic and cultural material that reflect the traditions
that make up today’s Spanish speaking worlds.
The certificate program also introduces the latest uses of technology in
the classroom and methods of assessment.
SPRING 2005 SCHEDULE
Professor Susan Mraz, ON-LINE
Designed exclusively for
pre-service and in-service teachers of Spanish, this course will provide an
in-depth study of assessment methods with emphasis on performance assessment
and achievement of standards. Conducted entirely in Spanish, it will focus on
assessment of Spanish language learners. This task-oriented course is organized
into interactive discussion sessions with topics drawn from reading
assignments, and weekly exercises through which participants practice designing
assessments and accompanying rubrics, completing projects and portfolios, and applying
self-assessment tools.

This
class will compare urban experiences in Latin America and in the United States.
It will also include an overview of the main moments in Spanish American
Literature when cities came to represent social, economic and demographic
tensions that redefined national and regional identities. The class also includes
a unit on the literature of Hispanic people in the U.S since the urban
experience is a central theme to this literature.

This interdisciplinary course
introduces students to contemporary Spain. Topics include: literature, art,
architecture, music, film, history, politics and society. The course explores
Spain’s most salient 19th, 20th and 21st century social
and cultural transformations. Advanced fluency in Spanish required. The course
will prepare teachers to develop connections between course content and the
Massachusetts National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.
Prerequisite: Advanced fluency in Spanish is
required.

501: THEORIES, METHODS, AND PRATICES IN THE TEACHING OF SPANISH AS A FOREIGN
LANGUAGE

This course is
specifically designed for pre-service and in-service teachers. It will provide
an overview of second language acquisition theory as well as an in-depth study
of current foreign language methodology as it applies to the teaching of
Spanish in middle school and high school environments. The philosophy of this
methodology centers on the use of language in meaningful contexts for
real-world communicative purposes. Students will gain practice in evaluating
textbooks, writing lesson plans, designing instructional units, and classroom
management procedures. This course will acquaint participants with the many
ways in which technology can be used to support and enhance the study of
Spanish. Discussions of the use of overhead projectors, audio and videotapes,
and language labs will be included.

This course, designed for
pre-service and in-service teachers of Spanish as a foreign language, will
acquaint participants with the many ways in which technology can be used to
support and enhance the study of Spanish. It is assumed that participants will
have basic word processing and Internet skills, as emphasis will be placed on
more advanced functions including Power Point presentations and the design of
web-based projects. Demonstrations and discussions of the use of overhead
projectors, audio and videotapes/DVDs and language labs will also be included.
All courses will prepare teachers
to develop connections between course content and the Massachusetts Curriculum
Framework for Foreign Languages and the National Standards for Foreign Language
Teaching.
